Presentation Day Five

ID Outline

Problem - Students cannot identify adaptations found in animals in the wild. They can also not recognize why certain animals have certain adaptations and how they help them in their biomes.

Need - Students will need access to an Interactive WhiteBoard to help them utilize the flipcharts/SMART Board programs that will be used to explore adaptations.

Students will also need access to a computer so they can access Brainpop and other videos found online that will help explain animal adaptations.

Students will also need to be able to understand what adaptations are needed for each biome in order to create their own animal for the final presentation.

Audience - The audience for my presentation will be 21 4th grade students. They range in their reading ability from struggling reader's and below level readers to reader's above grade level. Two students receive Tier 2 reading instruction and another receives Tier 3 instruction. There are no ELL learners and no students with an IEP. However, I will have two students in the audience who have behavioral concerns and will need to be encouraged and managed throughout the presentations. One of those students has a 504 for ADHD and will need concrete, scaffolded instruction.

Objectives -  The students will be able to identify animal adaptations and how they help animals survive in the wild.

The students will be able to identify which adaptations are required for certain biomes.

Content - Animal adaptations in the wild, how adaptations help animals survive, what certain adaptations do, how certain biomes determine certain adaptations.

Instructional Strategies - Flipcharts, videos, photos, student feedback, direct instruction, student creative writing, class discussion about topic

Additional Materials - If I had time I'd love to have an ecologist come in from the local park system and discuss witht he students adaptations and possibly bring in real examples for the students to examine. Computers, Promethean Board, and clickers will also be needed.

Program Use - Will be used for our science unit on biomes and adaptations

Summative Evaluation -

  • Need to give a pre-test to gain baseline data for different groups of students for assessment
  • Use Pre-Test to set baseline to use at end of lesson or unit to see how different groups performed
  • Students in lower bands will be given extra support. Can see how that extra support worked or didn't work
  • Analyze how effective a SmartBoard lesson was by giving a brief quiz at the end to see if the students understood the information presented. If not do well then need to reassess effectiveness of presentation.
  • Can use TurningPoint clickers to get quick assessment to see how effective parts of the presentations were
